HOW MANY PSYCHOLOGISTS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE
A LIGHT BULB?
Only One. But The Light Bulb Has To
Want To Change
The joke is wrong!
The light bulb does not have to want to change!
When people come into your path with something that
is troubling them, they usually come without a clear concept of
what they are looking for other than to not suffer so much.
Even less does it occur to them that they might be able to
do something to achieve a better future.
They are drenched in hopelessness. Your job is to
arouse hope in them. Your reward comes in seeing flickers of hope
begin to enter into their eyes and their tone of voice. It is like
something rising from the dead within their lives. That's why I
like to use the term "Vitality Therapy"
to describe a simple method by which you can learn to make this
happen.

Usually, when you start your conversation with sufferers,
they are far from ready to implement any advice to take action.
You must gradually plant this idea and arouse their motivation to
pursue it.
We all have opportunities to help other persons by
how we talk with them. There are common mistakes that are easy to
fall into that make these times less beneficial than they could
be. This book describes better things that anyone can easily learn
that can make a huge difference in the benefit of even a brief fifteen-minute
conversation with a hurting person.
If people come to you with many different kinds of
personal problems, you cannot be an expert in each type of problem.
Therefore, you need a simple approach to guide what you say to people
regardless of the type of problem they present.
Vitality therapy teaches you three simple steps
to follow to arouse in people you counsel a vision for their future
and a passion to pursue it. It relies on asking the right questions,
rather than giving suggestions. It motivates people to move themselves
into the life they would prefer to have in place of the one dominated
by their problems.
- What if people need help but don't realize it?
- How can you help without giving advice that is
not used?
- Must people really want to change? What if they
don't, but they tell you their problems anyway?
- What key do you use to arouse hope with hopeless
people?
- How would you like one method you could use with
any problem a person brings to you?
- How can you help someone who is forced by someone
else to talk to you?
- How can you control spouses who fight with each
other while you are trying to talk with them?
- Do you know the difference between forgiveness
and reconciliation? Do you know how to lead a person through each?
